Welcome to Year 3

We would all like to welcome you to Year 3 . We are really looking forward to the year ahead.

This half term we will ‘hook’ with the book ‘The Egyptian Cinderella’. Our key question is ‘How can we create the wonder of Ancient Egypt? ‘. We will look at where Egypt is and the history of Egypt including pharaohs and the pyramids. All of our topic work will be linked to the book. In English we will write a diary entry, create a fact file and retell the story.

In Maths we will be working on Place Value and Number, Addition and Subtraction as well as Multiplication and Division. Throughout each unit the children will practically practice each concept as well as solve problems and explain their reasoning.

Homework and spellings will be sent home on Wednesday and should be returned on Monday the following week. The homework activities are optional should your child wish to complete further work at home. All optional contributions will be praised and children will have the opportunity to share their work with the class.

The activities that we expect to be completed each week are listed below:

  • Daily reading for 10 minutes.

  • Practise the 10 spellings sent home each week for a test.

  • Practise times timetables (Times Tables Rock Stars website is a useful tool – each child has a login and your child has specific times tables they need to practise).

Our topic for this half term is ‘The Incredible Book Eating Boy’.  The topic has a Science focus based on the Human Body. We will learn about the digestive system and the teeth. All of our English writing will be centred around the book.

In Maths we use the Convince Me Maths Scheme which allows opportunities for children to Do, Think, Explain and Solve. The next seven weeks will see us studying Multiplication and Division, Fractions and Geometry.

Our school focus this year is ‘Alverton’s Year of Awesome Oracy’. We will continue to include speaking and listening opportunities in lessons and promote a high level of standard English.

We will continue to have Drumming Lessons every Friday morning with our specialist Drumming Teacher, Jools.

Children should have a PE kit in school every day.

Our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday

This term we will be doing hockey.

As you know, the school subscribes to a number of websites which can be used to support home learning and all children have logins and passwords to use these websites or apps:

Finally, don't forget to ask your child if they can tell you how to keep themselves safe when using any device to be online. Thanks to the annual Safer Internet Day activities, the children should be well-versed in all the tricks and tips needed to help them to keep as safe and sound as possible! If you are unsure of how to help, please come along and have a chat or alternatively, why not check out as a starting point for all things e-safety related?

Here’s to a happy and healthy new term at Alverton!
