Miss Eddowes Y5

Welcome back to Alverton! Mrs Longster, Mrs Turner and I hope that you had a lovely holiday.

Our main topic for the first part of this year is ‘AD 900’, which will be all about the Ancient Mayan Civilisation of South America.

Because this year is ‘The Year of Books’, special story books have been picked around this topic in order to really stimulate the children’s imagination and creativity: 'The Chocolate Tree' - a Mayan myth explaining the origin of Chocolate!, 'The Rain Player' and 'The Hero Twins'.

Later on in the second part of the term, the learning focus will shift to ‘Rainforests and Rivers’.

We are lucky to be receiving specialist football lessons this half term. Where possible, these sessions will be outside, so please can you ensure that children have both an indoor and outdoor PE kit with them every Monday.

How can you help at home?
Each week, children will bring home spellings and tables to learn. Spelling tests are carried out every Monday morning.
For our times table work our focus is on 'rapid recall' and the children are trying hard to recall the times table facts instantly. We are enjoying using 'ROCK STAR MATHS' to help use with these - and the children are working hard to improve their 'Rock Star' status each session.
The times table songs on 'Purple Mash' are also a great way of learning the tables (see link below).
