Miss Eddowes and Mrs Gomersall Y5

Welcome to Year 5

Welcome back to all parents, carers and children in Year 5.  I hope that you had a good summer holiday and made the most of the sunshine!

After our successful ‘Alverton Year of Books’ we will be introducing a new, whole school theme of ‘Vibrant Vocabulary’.  There will be many exciting events and activities that you will be able to participate in.

Our topic for this term is ‘Percy Jackson (and the Ancient Greeks)’ and the children will be learning about Ancient European Civilisations. Science will see the children learning about the Human Body and Changes in this half term followed by Sound.

We will be having swimming lessons every Wednesday morning and a PE lesson each week.

Please ensure that children have a PE kit in school every day.

Children arrived at school looking very smart on Monday.  We had a lot of lost property left at the end of last year so could you please make sure that uniform is clearly named.

Choices for school dinner must be made by Monday.  If meals are not chosen in advance, children will receive the meal of the day.

Homework will be set on Wednesdays and returned on Mondays. In Year 5, we ask that children are supported in their ten minutes of daily reading by being listened to by an adult or sibling and then having their Home School Record signed and dated, including the page numbers read. Please could the Home School Record be returned to school every day.

Spelling Tests will take place on a Monday morning.

As you know, the school subscribes to a number of websites which can be used to support home learning and all children have logins and passwords to use these websites or apps:

https://community.mathletics.com/signin/#/student

https://ttrockstars.com/login

Finally, don't forget to ask your child if they can tell you how to keep themselves safe when using any device to be online. Thanks to the annual Safer Internet Day activities, the children should be well-versed in all the tricks and tips needed to help them to keep as safe and sound as possible! If you are unsure of how to help, please come along and have a chat or alternatively, why not check out https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk as a starting point for all things e-safety related?

Here’s to a happy and healthy new term at Alverton!
