PE And Sport Premium For Primary Schools

What is the Sports Premium?

The Government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15 to provide new, substantial primary school sport funding’. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.

The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Purpose of Funding

Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses for the funding include:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • New or additional Change4Life sport clubs
  • Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
  • Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sportProviding places for pupils on after school sport clubs and holiday clubs

Providing opportunities for children to compete

We feel it is important that all children have the chance to represent their school and take part in competitive sport against other schools. We will continue our existing competitions such as netball, cross country ,football, tag rugby, athletics, hockey and swimming. We will also arrange further tournaments and fixtures between with the other primary schools within our cluster and Local Authority. Several sporting events take place within the school day and previously we have not been in a position to attend all of these sporting events.

Professional development of staff

One of the key strands of the sports funding is to develop the skills of our school staff so that the quality of PE and sport that is delivered will be enhanced. Qualified sports coaches will work alongside staff to deliver lessons and support planning and delivery of PE. Working in this way teacher confidence and expertise will develop and the school will benefit from high quality planning resource materials. One area of development identified by staff is that of assessment of PE. The school has employed a PE specialist to develop an assessment programme and to work with staff.

Providing quality assured materials for PE and school sport

The extra funding has enabled the school to provide more equipment to be used in PE lessons to encourage full and active participation.

Raising the status of PE

Alverton Sports Kits  have been purchased to be worn by pupils when at sporting competitions and outdoor events.

The school is proud to announce that Alverton School has achieved the Sainsbury’s School Games Silver Award for showing a dedication to sport and fitness both in and out of school. We have increased the number of competitions we enter as well as developing links within the wider community.

Swimming

The number of our Year 6 children that could swim 25m confidently, in 2022/2023 is 39.4%

The number of our Year 6 children that could swim 25m confidently, in 2021/2022 is 32%

The number of our Year 6 children that could swim 25m confidently, in 2020/2021 is 65%

The number of our Year 6 children that could swim 25m confidently, in 2019/2020 is 73%

The number of our Year 6 children that could swim 25m confidently, in 2018/2019 is 63%
