Year 5 Spring 2022

Year 5

Learning Highlights from Spring 22

This half term, our learning has been led by The Man Who Walked Between The Towers by Mordicai Gerstein.  It is a beautiful book that tells the true story of Philippe Petit, a French circus performer who stretched a tight rope between the Twin Towers in New York and walked across.  In science, we have been learning about the different forces that were acting on Philippe.  We have built parachutes and pulley systems to help us understand about gravity, air resistance and friction.

Making parachutes

We experimented with counterbalances and made counter balance toys.

In English we have been learning how to write flashbacks and eye-witness accounts of the amazing feats of Philippe Petit.  We have developed our ability at creating tension and atmosphere.  We also researched the Twin Towers and produced a report to share our knowledge with other children.

PE lessons have also been influenced by Philippe Petit as we have practised counter balances in gymnastics.

Our focus in Maths has been fractions and decimals.  We have developed our understanding and improved our ability at problem solving.

In Geography, we have learned the names of the different continents and the major rivers that cross them.  We know that most rivers enter a sea or ocean and the names of the oceans.  We have learned that the Earth is divided into biomes that share similar climates, landscapes, animals and plants.

In History, we have learned about the life of Boudicca.

New Learning Highlights

Summer 22

In Summer 1, our learning will be led by Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo.  It will lead an exciting History topic around the Anglo Saxons.  We will be looking at Anglo Saxon artefacts and finding out about all aspects of Anglo Saxon life and how their legacy affects our lives today.

We will be turning our classroom into a greenhouse by planting and growing a selection of plants.

Key Class Reminders

  • Year of Reading for Pleasure
  • PE next half term will be Thursday and Friday
  • Homework is given out every Wednesday and always contains spellings to practise. There is usually another piece of Homework linked to the topic which is a bit more fun and creative.
  • Everyone in our class has logins to Mathletics and Times Table Rock Stars. Work is regularly set on Mathletics that links to the learning that we have been doing in class.  There are also games to play that will improve mental maths skills.  Children can also log on to Reading Eggs to practise English Skills or Purplemash which supports all areas of the curriculum.
